Searching for your perfect bridal lipstick can seem a daunting task. Maybe you want to stick with something that you normally wear or maybe you want to push the boundaries and opt for something a bit different to what you normally wear , here are my top tips for when considering your bridal lipstick choice
- Remember to trust your makeup artist, if she suggests something, be open to trying something new, but the lipstick, try it out a few times before dismissing it. sometimes we get stuck in a rut and buy the same lipstick shades repeatedly out of habit
- Everything looks different against white/Ivory… how often have you worn a full-on ivory gown? I find the reflection of the ivory onto the face can make things look a little lighter , the same goes for looking at another bride or friend on social media and loving their lipstick choice- lighting, skin tone, hair colour etc all play a part on the true reflection of that shade so don’t be disheartened if it turns out not to be the nicest one on you.
- The flash of the professional photographer’s camera is strong so that means it will wash out anything too light and make anything darker appear stronger in your finished photos
- Maybe you’re unsure at your trial about the lipstick shade, that’s ok! Lipstick is probably one of the most personal pieces of makeup (mascara too) so I always suggest to my brides that if they get an opportunity while shopping around makeup counters to try on a few other shades of lipsticks and if they find one they love, purchase it and I will apply it on the day for them.
- Texture is another thing to consider, if your prone to dry lips it’s best to avoid matte lipsticks. I love lip gloss but am not always a fan of it on a bride, from a practical viewpoint I am always afraid of a wisp of hair sticking to the lips and then causing a streak across the face or the veil brushing off the lips. I think a satin lipstick so not too matte and not too glossy is always a happy medium
- Lipliner shades can change the tone of your lipstick also which I love, it means you can create a more custom shade for yourself
- Make sure to keep your lipstick with you throughout the day, no lipstick (except those long wear ones which I don’t like as they tend to make the lips look really dry as the day goes on) will last, so touch up regularly as this will help keep your makeup looking fresh
- If you want to go for a statement red lip- do it! But if you don’t normally wear red lipstick, start wearing more frequently on the run up to your wedding, just so you get used to the maintenance of a red lip.
- Also consider other elements in your overall styling- when a bride comes to me for a trial I look at the tones in her flower bouquet , the colour of her bridesmaids dresses and I often suggest a lipstick shade from that family tone of colours, just to tie everything in together
- Remember- it’s only lipstick so don’t sweat the small things
